POUWHARE - A Pillar of Strength
TAIRĀWHITI MUSEUM 1 JULY - 16 SEPTEMBER 2018
Leading up to the 150th Commemoration of the return of Te Kooti Rikirangi Te Turuki and his followers (Whakarau) from Wharekauri, landing at Whareongaonga on 9th July 1868, this exhibition, 'POUWHARE - A Pillar of Strength' is a visual artists tribute to the koroua.
POUWHARE provides a platform for the artists to voice their stories celebrating their connections to Te Kooti Rikirangi Te Turuki through their whakapapa, the stories of their tīpuna that served with him throughout his campaign, or stories of their tīpuna who were followers of the Ringatū faith.
The opening of 'POUWHARE - A Pillar of Strength' was held on the 1st July 2018 at the Tairāwhiti Museum in Gisborne. Curated by Tai Kerekere, this exhibition features new works by twelve Tairāwhiti artists including: Dr Haare Williams, Simon Lardelli, Steve Gibbs, Tai Kerekere, Henare Tahuri, Tawera Tahuri, Kaaterina Kerekere, Nick Tupara, Matthew Thornton, Tiopira Rauna, Erena Koopu and John Moetara.
